Introduction:
The Kokako bird belongs to the endemic New Zealand wattlebirds, an ancient family of birds which involves the North and South Island Saddleback and the extinct Huia. Also it is the only survivor of its kind left in New Zealand. The Kokako bird has such a beautiful clear voice in the New Zealand bush, it is called the true bellbird, or the organ bird.

Appearance:
The Kokako bird,underneath its chin it has a blue wattle,however the North Kokako bird only has a blue wattle. The South has a orange/ yellow appearance. The main colour of its body is black with a long tail and short wings. It also loves to fly but it prefers to use it’s powerful legs to run, so it can run through the forest.

Diet:
They have a mixed diet that changes every season in winter they eat leaves, fern fronds and some insect. When spring comes they eat nectar and leaf buds, when summer comes they start to eat bigger insects like caterpillars, moths, weta and other invertebrates, and they love to eat fruits.

Habitat:
Kokako birds are forest birds that like to live in big trees. Kokako have an amazing skill to be able live in cutover native forest and also are known to nest in pine trees on the border of the native bush.

Predators:
Kokako have evolved over time to protect themselves from predators such as falcons so they build their nest with good overhead cover. Now a days Kokako birds have to protect themselves from possums, cats and dogs.

Conclusion:
Kokako birds are an unique species to New Zealand and if we don’t look after them they will become extinct, and die. Also Kokako birds have the most beautiful voice ever within the forest.
